NM Women in Film Hosts Award Presentation and Showcase in Honor of Ali MacGraw

Local Non-Profit Film Chapter presents 2010 Sage Award and Showcase celebrating Local Celebrity and International Women’s Month

NM Women In Film (“NMWIF”), a non-profit chapter organization dedicated to supporting women’s achievement in film and television, is hosting a tribute to fellow New Mexican and actress, Ali MacGraw, at their 2010 Sage Award presentation on Sunday, March 21st. In addition, NMWIF will also present a showcase of the best female-created films from Women in Film and Television International (WIFTI)’s annual event held in March of each year.

The New Mexico Women in Film Sage Award was created to honor a person or entity which takes professional and/or financial risks to create important film and television work dedicated to the "greater feminine," i.e. issues of social justice, environmental degradation and protection, civil rights, racism and sexism. The NMWIF chapter conducted a call for nominations in 2009 and Ali MacGraw won the board members’ vote to receive the 2010 award.

“We are very excited to honor Ali and we look forward to a wonderful event celebrating her historic role in film, as well as the best short films from our sister filmmakers around the world,” said board member and co-chair of the Sage event, Trish Lopez. “We hope that our membership and the public will join us in Santa Fe on March 21st to commemorate this special occasion!”

New Mexico Women in Film - In Las Cruces

A local chapter of New Mexico Women in Film is just getting organized in Las Cruces.

There will be an informational meeting on Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 in the THX theatre, room 171, in Milton Hall, NMSU Campus. This organization is a great way for you meet other filmmakers and working artists from across the state.

Men as well as women are encouraged to be a part of the group.

On Tuesday, August 25, New Mexico Women in Film will be hosting a panel discussion focusing on creating original content for the Internet. The panel will discuss how the Internet has blossomed into an attractive venue for filmmakers (and storytellers in general) who are seeking new creative opportunities. Panelists will not only look at content creation, but will also discuss how the Internet can serve those who want to reach a larger audience or who seek greater professional recognition. The event will include a screening of a portion of Date Doctor: This Might Sting, a brand new webisode made in New Mexico.

Panelists include Carolyn Handler Miller, New Media writer and author of Digital Storytelling, Second Edition and Date Doctor’s co-producers, writer-director Hannah Macpherson and actress Rebekah Wiggins. The panel will be moderated by Monique Anair, faculty member of the Film and Media Arts program at Santa Fe Community College.

Event: Screening of Shirley Clarke's film "The Connection", followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker's daughter, Wendy Clarke

Born in New York, Shirley Clarke (1919-1997) first started making films in the 1950’s. Many of her films were considered to be artistic breakthroughs, and Clarke was a major leader in the emergence of an American independent filmmaking movement in New York. She made low-budget black and white films that addressed relevant social issues. Clarke lectured frequently and spoke at theaters and museums.

"The Connection" is a 1961 black and white film directed by Shirley Clarke. The film is based on a play of the same name by Jack Gelber about heroin-addicted jazz musicians. Clarke’s editing style and cinematography lend a documentary-feel to the film, but it is actually carefully scripted. The film is one of the 100 Best Films in the National Film Archives and won the Critic's Award at Cannes in 1961.

Shirley's daughter, Wendy Clarke, is an artist and filmmaker and lives north of Taos in New Mexico. She will by present for a Q&A after the screening.

NMWIF 1st ANNUAL ATHENA AWARDS CEREMONY – May 17th:

The 1st Annual Athena Awards for Excellence in Screenwriting, sponsored by New Mexico Women in Film and the NMWIF Writers' Group, will be presented on Sunday, May 17th at 6PM at the James A. Little Theatre at the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe.

The finalists in the short screenwriting competition will be judged blindly by a panel of top industry professionals, including Emmy Award-winning writer Kirk Ellis, writer/producer for “John Adams”, and writing team Noni White and Robert (Bob) Tzudiker, who have been judges for the Emmy’s and the Oscars. The top 3 winning pieces will be read by professional actors.

The event is free and open to the public. There will be a Reception following the ceremony (no alcohol). Dress is black-tie optional.
