There are casting notices out there for SAG new media productions under the “SAG New Media Contract.” A few notes may help clarify what these are, and help performers enforce a few of their rights.
First, this is not the new media sideletter recently negotiated with the AMPTP (major studios) as part of the theatrical contract. Rather, it’s a new media contract (the SAG New Media Agreement) that’s been available to independent producers for a number of years—that is, producers who are not signatories to the theatrical and/or TV agreements. So, disagreements that a performer may have with this agreement simply don’t relate to the compromises in the new TV/theatrical deal.

Direct Flights Between LAX and Santa Fe!
Great news for those of you traveling back and forth from LAX and Santa Fe. . . Another great reason for film professionals to live and work in Santa Fe.
SANTA FE-Governor Bill Richardson today joined local officials and members of the community in welcoming the return of commercial air service to Santa Fe. Beginning today, American Eagle will offer daily, direct flights between Santa Fe and Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport.
Additionally, Governor Richardson announced today that American Eagle will start offering daily flights to Los Angeles International Airport beginning November 19th.
“I am thrilled that American Eagle is leading the way in returning commercial air service to Santa Fe with flights now to Dallas and soon to Los Angeles,” Governor Bill Richardson said. “Commercial air service is key to the economic development of the area and to growing New Mexico’s thriving tourism and film industries.”
“This is an exciting day for American Eagle and we are proud to launch the first commercial jet service to Santa Fe in decades,” American Eagle President and CEO Peter Bowler said. “Just in time for the city’s 400th birthday, this new service will make New Mexico’s capital more accessible and convenient for visitors from around the country and around the world.”
Commercial air service has been absent from the Santa Fe airport since January 2008. However, the airport has been without larger commercial jet service for decades. Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration cleared the airport for use by regional jets.

SAG Contract Dispute is Over!

LOS ANGELES — Members of theScreen Actors Guild voted overwhelmingly to ratify a two-year contract covering movies and prime-time TV shows made by the major Hollywood studios, the union announced Tuesday.

Some 78% of those who voted were in favor of the deal, a show of unity following a bitter dispute that saw Guild members fighting among themselves and left them further behind than where they started. About 110,000 SAG members were sent ballots and more than 35% cast votes.
The new contract immediately raises actors' minimum pay by 3% and grants another 3.5% raise in the second year of the deal, which along with better pension benefits and some Internet compensation gives them $105 million in overall gains, the union said.
But it does not improve upon the Internet terms that other unions have already accepted. Negotiators replaced in January had sought more lucrative Web compensation.
SAG fought alone for better terms than were secured by writers, directors and another actors union called

The deal comes nearly a year after the last contract expired, meaning SAG actors lost out on proposed raises over the past year that the studios estimated totaled nearly $80 million.
"We were behind the eight ball to some extent with the amount of time we had been working without a contract at all," said Adam Arkin, an actor who was elected to the Guild's board last fall. "Whatever gains are to be made in the future are going to have to start with us not going down the road of this level of fracture within the community of SAG."
The new contract takes effect after midnight and expires on June 30, 2011, about the same time as those of other unions, allowing SAG to maintain the future threat of a joint strike. That expiration date had been one of the final points of contention.

"Our point of view was rejected for now. I don't think it was because they said necessarily we're wrong," he said. "You need solidarity. We weren't able to build that this time."

Several months ago, we learned that pilot season this year was 94% AFTRA (or 87% by some calculations), a complete 180 from its usual 90% SAG. That didn’t look good for SAG, but a few Membership First hardliners urged us to wait and see how the all-important series pickups turned out.
Not so well, we now know—at least, not so well from a SAG perspective. The AP is reporting that 25 out of 30 shows picked up by broadcast networks this spring were AFTRA and just five were SAG. That’s about 83% AFTRA to 17% SAG—not much better for SAG than the pilot numbers. In contrast, last year’s figures, according to the AP, were 3 AFTRA and 19 SAG, i.e., 14% AFTRA and 86% SAG. In other words, a complete 180.

New Mexico Film Office & IATSE Local 480 Kick Off Tour to Meet with Native American and Hispanic Residents
ANTA FE-The New Mexico Film Office is teaming up with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 480 for a series of presentations designed to inform Native American and Hispanic residents about potential careers in the movie industry. The first five presentations begin this Thursday, June 11th and will include the personal stories of current employees in the industry, as well as discussions about training opportunities available for New Mexicans.
“We are working to make sure that all New Mexicans have a chance to be a part of this exciting and growing industry,” said Lisa Strout, Director of the New Mexico Film Office. “Through these presentations we are reaching out to interested Hispanic and Native American New Mexicans who may not otherwise be exposed to the opportunities that are available.”
“The state’s efforts to build the state’s movie industry have helped boost the economy and provide good jobs for all New Mexicans,” said Jon Hendry, business manager for IATSE Local 480. “Our members are giving back to their communities by educating others about the business and helping to keep the momentum going.”

What is the 48 Hour Film Project?
The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and
a team make a movie-write, shoot, edit and score it-in
just 48 hours.
On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of
dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the
movie must be complete. Then it will show at the KiMo theater, just 3 days later!
The Filmmaking Weekend is July 10-12!

Lawmakers debate limits to Michigan film incentives
Michigan upstaged 28 other states competing for Hollywood's attention when lawmakers and Gov. Jennifer Granholm approved tax refunds as high as 42 percent on production costs for motion pictures shot here.
It certainly got Clint Eastwood's attention. His acclaimed "Gran Torino" was one of the 28 movies produced mostly in Michigan last year, up from three films shot here in 2007.
The euphoria over Michigan's flirtation with cinema stars may not last long, however, amid budget woes as high as $2 billion and a projection that film-related rebates could sap $150 million from next year's state tax collections.

New Mexico Women in Film Event!
Event: Screening of Shirley Clarke's film "The Connection", followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker's daughter, Wendy Clarke

Born in New York, Shirley Clarke (1919-1997) first started making films in the 1950’s. Many of her films were considered to be artistic breakthroughs, and Clarke was a major leader in the emergence of an American independent filmmaking movement in New York. She made low-budget black and white films that addressed relevant social issues. Clarke lectured frequently and spoke at theaters and museums.
"The Connection" is a 1961 black and white film directed by Shirley Clarke. The film is based on a play of the same name by Jack Gelber about heroin-addicted jazz musicians. Clarke’s editing style and cinematography lend a documentary-feel to the film, but it is actually carefully scripted. The film is one of the 100 Best Films in the National Film Archives and won the Critic's Award at Cannes in 1961.
Shirley's daughter, Wendy Clarke, is an artist and filmmaker and lives north of Taos in New Mexico. She will by present for a Q&A after the screening.

Albuquerque’s most interactive film festival is coming soon to The Box Performance Space!!!
The infamous Old West gunman Wild Bill will be your host through two hours of short films by Albuquerque’s finest filmmakers. The film can be about anything; comedy, horror, drama, experimental, etc. Maybe you have a scene from a larger work that you want screened for an audience, or a short home movie that you and your friends think is hilarious. Anything goes! Each film will be given a two minute grace period and after that, it’s up to the audience – if they like what they see, the film has a chance at a cash prize and world fame. If they don’t, the film is put out of its misery by Wild Bill and his six shooters. So don’t wait! Submit your film! Bring your friends! And get ready for a night of Wild West Filmmaking Fun!

Film Industry Happy Hour May 28th at O'Niell's

Director McG Talks About Terminator Salvation
Sporting a dark purple suit at the press day for Terminator Salvation, director McG was so eager to talk to press about his latest project that he came in excitedly asking the room full of reporters what we all thought of the movie. As he sat down, the engaging director noticed a journalist wearing a T-shirt with an old record on it and started the interview on his own by talking about how he missed record stores and how that tied into the film.
"Hi guys, I have a Technics turntable. This film has a lot to do with progress and there's progress and de-progress, and I would consider the death of the record shop not progress. I'm not kidding. I love iTunes like the next guy, but I love sifting through the racks and finding records. I wanted the film, in fact, to feel very tactile, so we built everything and ultimately blew it up."
