Direct Flights Between LAX and Santa Fe!

Great news for those of you traveling back and forth from LAX and Santa Fe. . . Another great reason for film professionals to live and work in Santa Fe.

SANTA FE-Governor Bill Richardson today joined local officials and members of the community in welcoming the return of commercial air service to Santa Fe. Beginning today, American Eagle will offer daily, direct flights between Santa Fe and Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport.

Additionally, Governor Richardson announced today that American Eagle will start offering daily flights to Los Angeles International Airport beginning November 19th.

“I am thrilled that American Eagle is leading the way in returning commercial air service to Santa Fe with flights now to Dallas and soon to Los Angeles,” Governor Bill Richardson said. “Commercial air service is key to the economic development of the area and to growing New Mexico’s thriving tourism and film industries.”

“This is an exciting day for American Eagle and we are proud to launch the first commercial jet service to Santa Fe in decades,” American Eagle President and CEO Peter Bowler said. “Just in time for the city’s 400th birthday, this new service will make New Mexico’s capital more accessible and convenient for visitors from around the country and around the world.”

Commercial air service has been absent from the Santa Fe airport since January 2008. However, the airport has been without larger commercial jet service for decades. Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration cleared the airport for use by regional jets.

SAG Contract Dispute is Over!

From the USA Today

LOS ANGELES — Members of the Screen Actors Guild voted overwhelmingly to ratify a two-year contract covering movies and prime-time TV shows made by the major Hollywood studios, the union announced Tuesday.

Some 78% of those who voted were in favor of the deal, a show of unity following a bitter dispute that saw Guild members fighting among themselves and left them further behind than where they started. About 110,000 SAG members were sent ballots and more than 35% cast votes.

The new contract immediately raises actors' minimum pay by 3% and grants another 3.5% raise in the second year of the deal, which along with better pension benefits and some Internet compensation gives them $105 million in overall gains, the union said.

But it does not improve upon the Internet terms that other unions have already accepted. Negotiators replaced in January had sought more lucrative Web compensation.

SAG fought alone for better terms than were secured by writers, directors and another actors union called AFTRA, but the battle ended up hurting it as TV studios like ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS sent most of their new work AFTRA's way. SAG maintains exclusive jurisdiction over feature films.

The deal comes nearly a year after the last contract expired, meaning SAG actors lost out on proposed raises over the past year that the studios estimated totaled nearly $80 million.

"We were behind the eight ball to some extent with the amount of time we had been working without a contract at all," said Adam Arkin, an actor who was elected to the Guild's board last fall. "Whatever gains are to be made in the future are going to have to start with us not going down the road of this level of fracture within the community of SAG."

The new contract takes effect after midnight and expires on June 30, 2011, about the same time as those of other unions, allowing SAG to maintain the future threat of a joint strike. That expiration date had been one of the final points of contention.

The past year's infighting came to a head in January when recently elected moderates staged a boardroom coup, ousting the Guild's national executive director, Doug Allen, and muzzling President Alan Rosenberg.

That set a new tone as Interim Executive Director David White worked to salvage a deal in back-door talks with executives such as Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Iger and Warner Bros. Chief Executive Barry Meyer. Warner Bros. is a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc.

A tentative deal was reached in April, about a year after talks first began.

White said in a statement that work on the next round of negotiations "begins now," adding that he would also begin to repair damaged relations with other unions.

SAG and AFTRA split acrimoniously last year and decided to negotiate deals with the studios separately for the first time in three decades.

Rosenberg acknowledged Tuesday that actors did not agree with his executive team's hard stance. But he said he would run for a third term as president in the fall and hope to be part of the contract talks in two years.

"Our point of view was rejected for now. I don't think it was because they said necessarily we're wrong," he said. "You need solidarity. We weren't able to build that this time."

Every major segment of SAG voted for the deal, with 71% of voting Hollywood actors, 86% in New York and 89% in other U.S. regions voting in favor.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Artists, the coalition of major studios, on Tuesday called the ratification "good news for the entertainment industry." The directors' guild and AFTRA also issued congratulatory statements.

TV Series Pickups Favor AFTRA 5 to 1

From the Digital Media Law Blog by J Handel.

Several months ago, we learned that pilot season this year was 94% AFTRA (or 87% by some calculations), a complete 180 from its usual 90% SAG. That didn’t look good for SAG, but a few Membership First hardliners urged us to wait and see how the all-important series pickups turned out.

Not so well, we now know—at least, not so well from a SAG perspective. The AP is reporting that 25 out of 30 shows picked up by broadcast networks this spring were AFTRA and just five were SAG. That’s about 83% AFTRA to 17% SAG—not much better for SAG than the pilot numbers. In contrast, last year’s figures, according to the AP, were 3 AFTRA and 19 SAG, i.e., 14% AFTRA and 86% SAG. In other words, a complete 180.

Time to Celebrate! Entertainment Partners Declares June “Production Incentives Awareness Month”

Burbank, CA – June 2, 2009 Entertainment Partners (EP), a 100% employee-owned company and the leading provider of payroll and production management solutions for the entertainment industry, announced today its June lineup of events and materials to heighten industry awareness of the complex, critical topic of Production Incentives.

“We are proud to view ourselves truly as partners to our clients,” notes EP CEO and President Markham L. Goldstein. “Particularly in this economy, we consider any assistance that we can provide to minimize spending and maximize production opportunities to be part of our commitment to our clients.”

On Sunday, June 7, as part of the Producer’s Guild of America’s inaugural “Produced By” conference, EP is sponsoring “Made in the USA: Navigating Domestic Tax Incentives,” a sold-out panel featuring PGA East Chairman and production finance/risk management specialist John Hadity, EP incentives expert and Vice President Joseph Chianese, and recognized industry leader Mary Ann Hughes, Vice President Film Production Planning, Walt Disney Pictures.

Welcoming California to the production incentives mix, EP will proudly present the California Film Commission’s annual California Locations Reception at The London, West Hollywood, on June 16. “Entertainment Partners has been a loyal supporter of the California Film Commission and worked closely with us for years on the effort to create tax incentives for California. Their expertise in state-wide incentive programs proved to be a valuable resource to us. This year, with their support, we succeeded,” says California Film Commission Executive Director, Amy Lemisch.

Moving to the virtual world, EP will join with the Producer’s Guild of America and 411 Publishing to present a series of “webinars” designed to educate and inform the production community. The first session, “Incentives 101: What Every Producer Needs to Know to Maximize Production Incentives,” will be presented on June 24 at 11:00 am PDT. Free registration is available at www.LA411.com.

Finally, ending the month on a more tangible note, EP will release the latest edition of the complimentary The Essential Guide to U.S. & International Production Incentives. To order The Guide or get the most up-to-date, accurate information, please visit www.productionincentives.com.

“In reality,” Goldstein asserts, “at EP every month is ‘Production Incentives Awareness Month.’ But for those who may not be very familiar with the resources available, June is a great time to become acquainted.”

Lawmakers debate limits to Michigan film incentives

Michigan upstaged 28 other states competing for Hollywood's attention when lawmakers and Gov. Jennifer Granholm approved tax refunds as high as 42 percent on production costs for motion pictures shot here.

It certainly got Clint Eastwood's attention. His acclaimed "Gran Torino" was one of the 28 movies produced mostly in Michigan last year, up from three films shot here in 2007.

The euphoria over Michigan's flirtation with cinema stars may not last long, however, amid budget woes as high as $2 billion and a projection that film-related rebates could sap $150 million from next year's state tax collections.

She made low-budget black and white films that addressed relevant social issues. Clarke lectured frequently and spoke at theaters and museums.

"The Connection" is a 1961 black and white film directed by Shirley Clarke. The film is based on a play of the same name by Jack Gelber about heroin-addicted jazz musicians. Clarke’s editing style and cinematography lend a documentary-feel to the film, but it is actually carefully scripted. The film is one of the 100 Best Films in the National Film Archives and won the Critic's Award at Cannes in 1961.

Shirley's daughter, Wendy Clarke, is an artist and filmmaker and lives north of Taos in New Mexico. She will by present for a Q&A after the screening.

Director McG Talks About Terminator Salvation

Sporting a dark purple suit at the press day for Terminator Salvation, director McG was so eager to talk to press about his latest project that he came in excitedly asking the room full of reporters what we all thought of the movie. As he sat down, the engaging director noticed a journalist wearing a T-shirt with an old record on it and started the interview on his own by talking about how he missed record stores and how that tied into the film.

"Hi guys, I have a Technics turntable. This film has a lot to do with progress and there's progress and de-progress, and I would consider the death of the record shop not progress. I'm not kidding. I love iTunes like the next guy, but I love sifting through the racks and finding records. I wanted the film, in fact, to feel very tactile, so we built everything and ultimately blew it up."

SAG Hardliners' Picnic No Walk in the Park

What if you held a picnic and nobody came? That’s almost where Membership First found itself yesterday. A beautiful day, a heavily promoted event, yet the SAG faction was only able to draw about 70 people to its Griffith Park / LA Zoo shindig, reports Variety.

SAG President Alan Rosenberg, who spoke at the picnic cum rally, predicted “a good chance” of defeat for the pending TV/theatrical deal, but that seems unlikely if MF can only attract a handful of members to an event in LA, considered the group’s stronghold. The ballots go out tomorrow (Tuesday the 19th), with a June 9 return date, so we’ll know in a few weeks whether the MF tigers still roar or whether they’ve turned to paper.

Robert Redford Brings Sundance to New Mexico - Big News!

New Mexico’s film industry is getting some more star power, courtesy of Robert Redford.

The actor and director joined Gov. Bill Richardson Thursday to announce an initiative called Sundance in New Mexico.

Redford founded the Sundance Institute in Utah in 1981. The nonprofit organization fosters the development of original storytelling for film and theater. It is known internationally for its artistic development programs for directors, screenwriters, producers, film composers, playwrights and theater artists.

Sundance will partner with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the New Mexico Film Office to create and expand upon training programs in film, the arts and the environment. The programs will target American Indian and Hispanic filmmakers.

Sundance New Mexico will be based at Los Luceros, a 148-acre ranch complex north of Española. The Department of Cultural Affairs bought Los Luceros last year from the family of Frank and Ann Cabot, relatives of Mary Cabot Wheelwright. . .

The Dish on Some of the Latest SAG/AFTRA Stuff from Jonathan Handel's Digital Media Law Blog

SAG’s Hollywood branch, dominated by the hardline Membership First faction, has passed a motion forming a task force to explore “acquisition of actors of AFTRA,” reports SAGWatch. The purpose of the awkwardly-phrased motion is evidently to eliminate AFTRA’s jurisdiction over television acting (long a stated goal of MF), leaving it with only broadcasters (newscasters, weather reporters, etc.), singers and others, but not actors. To the same end, various MF-ers, including some who supported the motion, are running in the now-in-progress AFTRA board elections, the better to dismantle AFTRA from within.

All in all, it’s yet another anti-AFTRA campaign, courtesy of the faction whose record of accomplishment includes no ratified contracts, continued opposition to the approved deal on the table, a ten month stalemate, a national board meeting featuring a 28-hour filibuster, a lawsuit against their own union (which continues to this day despite rejection at both the trial and appellate levels), a gaping budget deficit, a loss of almost all pilots and new series to AFTRA, contract rates that are lower than AFTRA’s and will continue to be so for at least the next two years, a loss of tens of millions of dollars in wages to date (due to lower rates in effect during the stalemate), a virtual halt to studio theatrical production for the duration of the stalemate, denigration of the union’s own membership as “frightened little children” and of the union’s own lawyers as “liars,” continued factionalism and infighting, disparagement of AFTRA as a “scumbag union,” and the fostering of enmity from members of other unions (particularly IATSE, obviously AFTRA, and, no doubt, the DGA) throughout the industry. Quite a platform for the upcoming SAG elections.

The 48 Hour Film Project is a great opportunity to flex your creative muscles, hone your production skills, and test your mental mettle.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS! In one wild, sleepless weekend, you and your A-Team will make a movie--write, shoot, edit and score it. From scratch. In 48 hours. On Friday, July 10, you'll draw your genre from the cruel hat of fate. You'll then get a character, prop, and line of dialogue to include in your movie. Forty eight hours later, on Sunday, July 12, the movie must be complete.
All films will then be shown on the big screen at The KiMo Theatre!

WHAT CAN I WIN?

The winning Albuquerque film will win a trophy and a copy of Movie Magic Screenwriter Software. This team will also compete against other city winners for a chance to win a Panasonic HPX 170 HD camera and $3000!

The Albuquerque Winner will be also be screened at Filmapalooza, the official 48HFP Awards Weekend, at NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Convention in Las Vegas.

And, if that's not enough, you have a chance of being one of the top city winning films which will screen at Cannes Film Festival!

The Accolade Competition - Call for Entries!

Call for Entries ~ Accolade Named Among Top 25 Festivals

Deadline: May 29, 2009

Information: www.TheAccolade.net

Now in its seventh year, top-tier, international awards competition, The Accolade, announces its Call for Entries for filmmakers, television producers and videographers.

The Accolade is a non-traditional, virtual venue. Awards go to those filmmakers, television producers and videographers who produce fresh, standout entertainment, animation and compelling documentaries. It is a showcase for cinematic gems and unique voices.

Most importantly, The Accolade team works passionately to help worthy productions gain the publicity and distribution they deserve. That is what The Accolade is all about: helping winners of this coveted award achieve recognition and distribution opportunities.

Every filmmaker, television producer and videographer wants credibility associated with their work and buzz about their productions. The Accolade sends information about Accolade winners via email to over 28,000 industry professionals. The Accolade is an award recognized for its rigorous evaluation process by buyers and distributors, inspiring confidence that winning productions are of high quality.

Quality and creativity are celebrated in three levels of awards: Best of Show, Award of Excellence and Award of Merit. Best of Show honors are granted only if worthy productions are discovered. Likewise, no more than 15% of entries are granted Awards of Excellence. Notable artistic and technical productions are recognized at the Award of Merit level. Annually, a special award is given to a production that makes a significant contribution to social change or a humanitarian effort.

The Accolade receives entries from all over the world: Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Columbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Martinique, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom and the United States.

MovieMaker Magazine recently included The Accolade among the Top 25 Festivals "Worth The Entry Fee." The article said, "Past participants can't stop raving about the professional opportunities participation in this event has generated for their work."
