Director McG Talks About Terminator Salvation

Sporting a dark purple suit at the press day for Terminator Salvation, director McG was so eager to talk to press about his latest project that he came in excitedly asking the room full of reporters what we all thought of the movie. As he sat down, the engaging director noticed a journalist wearing a T-shirt with an old record on it and started the interview on his own by talking about how he missed record stores and how that tied into the film.

"Hi guys, I have a Technics turntable. This film has a lot to do with progress and there's progress and de-progress, and I would consider the death of the record shop not progress. I'm not kidding. I love iTunes like the next guy, but I love sifting through the racks and finding records. I wanted the film, in fact, to feel very tactile, so we built everything and ultimately blew it up."

SAG Hardliners' Picnic No Walk in the Park

What if you held a picnic and nobody came? That’s almost where Membership First found itself yesterday. A beautiful day, a heavily promoted event, yet the SAG faction was only able to draw about 70 people to its Griffith Park / LA Zoo shindig, reports Variety.

SAG President Alan Rosenberg, who spoke at the picnic cum rally, predicted “a good chance” of defeat for the pending TV/theatrical deal, but that seems unlikely if MF can only attract a handful of members to an event in LA, considered the group’s stronghold. The ballots go out tomorrow (Tuesday the 19th), with a June 9 return date, so we’ll know in a few weeks whether the MF tigers still roar or whether they’ve turned to paper.

From the Digital Media Law Blog by J Handel - Great source of info for film and media related issues, especially SAG!

Robert Redford Brings Sundance to New Mexico - Big News!

New Mexico’s film industry is getting some more star power, courtesy of Robert Redford.

The actor and director joined Gov. Bill Richardson Thursday to announce an initiative called Sundance in New Mexico.

Redford founded the Sundance Institute in Utah in 1981. The nonprofit organization fosters the development of original storytelling for film and theater. It is known internationally for its artistic development programs for directors, screenwriters, producers, film composers, playwrights and theater artists.

Sundance will partner with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the New Mexico Film Office to create and expand upon training programs in film, the arts and the environment. The programs will target American Indian and Hispanic filmmakers.

Sundance New Mexico will be based at Los Luceros, a 148-acre ranch complex north of EspaƱola. The Department of Cultural Affairs bought Los Luceros last year from the family of Frank and Ann Cabot, relatives of Mary Cabot Wheelwright. . .

The Dish on Some of the Latest SAG/AFTRA Stuff from Jonathan Handel's Digital Media Law Blog

SAG’s Hollywood branch, dominated by the hardline Membership First faction, has passed a motion forming a task force to explore “acquisition of actors of AFTRA,” reports SAGWatch. The purpose of the awkwardly-phrased motion is evidently to eliminate AFTRA’s jurisdiction over television acting (long a stated goal of MF), leaving it with only broadcasters (newscasters, weather reporters, etc.), singers and others, but not actors. To the same end, various MF-ers, including some who supported the motion, are running in the now-in-progress AFTRA board elections, the better to dismantle AFTRA from within.

All in all, it’s yet another anti-AFTRA campaign, courtesy of the faction whose record of accomplishment includes no ratified contracts, continued opposition to the approved deal on the table, a ten month stalemate, a national board meeting featuring a 28-hour filibuster, a lawsuit against their own union (which continues to this day despite rejection at both the trial and appellate levels), a gaping budget deficit, a loss of almost all pilots and new series to AFTRA, contract rates that are lower than AFTRA’s and will continue to be so for at least the next two years, a loss of tens of millions of dollars in wages to date (due to lower rates in effect during the stalemate), a virtual halt to studio theatrical production for the duration of the stalemate, denigration of the union’s own membership as “frightened little children” and of the union’s own lawyers as “liars,” continued factionalism and infighting, disparagement of AFTRA as a “scumbag union,” and the fostering of enmity from members of other unions (particularly IATSE, obviously AFTRA, and, no doubt, the DGA) throughout the industry. Quite a platform for the upcoming SAG elections.

The Accolade Competition - Call for Entries!

Call for Entries ~ Accolade Named Among Top 25 Festivals

Deadline: May 29, 2009

Information: www.TheAccolade.net

Now in its seventh year, top-tier, international awards competition, The Accolade, announces its Call for Entries for filmmakers, television producers and videographers.

The Accolade is a non-traditional, virtual venue. Awards go to those filmmakers, television producers and videographers who produce fresh, standout entertainment, animation and compelling documentaries. It is a showcase for cinematic gems and unique voices.

Most importantly, The Accolade team works passionately to help worthy productions gain the publicity and distribution they deserve. That is what The Accolade is all about: helping winners of this coveted award achieve recognition and distribution opportunities.

Every filmmaker, television producer and videographer wants credibility associated with their work and buzz about their productions. The Accolade sends information about Accolade winners via email to over 28,000 industry professionals. The Accolade is an award recognized for its rigorous evaluation process by buyers and distributors, inspiring confidence that winning productions are of high quality.

Quality and creativity are celebrated in three levels of awards: Best of Show, Award of Excellence and Award of Merit. Best of Show honors are granted only if worthy productions are discovered. Likewise, no more than 15% of entries are granted Awards of Excellence. Notable artistic and technical productions are recognized at the Award of Merit level. Annually, a special award is given to a production that makes a significant contribution to social change or a humanitarian effort.

The Accolade receives entries from all over the world: Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Columbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Martinique, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom and the United States.

MovieMaker Magazine recently included The Accolade among the Top 25 Festivals "Worth The Entry Fee." The article said, "Past participants can't stop raving about the professional opportunities participation in this event has generated for their work."

Lightning Fast Searches on CREW and PRODUCTION SUPPORT/PERSONAL SERVICES!

We've made some serious improvements to crewnewmexico.com this week, and we're sure you'll approve of the results. Starting with the CREW and SUPPORT sections of the site, we've put the search results on hi-test, delivering lighting-fast results in a new and improved format.

Now instead of the same member appearing multiple times in search results (1x for each skill, and 1 x for each Union affiliation), they are listed only 1x, but with all of their skills and unions listed together. Now you'll be able to see who's who and what they do with much greater efficiency.

We appreciate your patience during this change, and look forward to your comments. We'll be making the same changes to the rest of the site this week!

One-third of family enterprises survive the transition from founder to the second generation. This extraordinarily low survival rate marks an alarming decline. Film Crew Training - Check It Out

The New Mexico Film Office is offering an orientation session on its program to retrain laid off workers for the film industry.

The Film Office and the Department of Workforce Solutions will offer a second session on the Retrain and Sustain film crew training program on April 8 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Kachina Ballroom at the Lodge at Santa Fe, 750 N. St. Francis Dr. The session is being presented in conjunction with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 480.

The session is free, but attendees must RSVP. The objective is to provide information about how experienced carpenters, painters, sheet metal fabricators, welders and landscapers can transfer those job skills into opportunities with the film industry, which is booming here in large part because of generous state tax incentives.

The event is not a job fair, but an informational seminar. Four film crew professionals will discuss their craft and session attendees will be offered an opportunity to sign up for specific training that is currently being organized.

To register, send an e-mail to info@nmfilm.com or call (505) 476-5603.

Great News (for us) - Article on the BBC

The New Mexico film industry is not just a local phenomenon. We're known around the world as a film "hotspot," and we continue on as one of the state's fastest growing industries. Read on.

Los Angeles, the self-proclaimed movie capital of the world, is facing its biggest crisis in the history of film-making .

Hollywood is being snubbed by its own creative talent. There is something of a stampede by the entertainment industry to get out of town.

Long before the global economic downturn kicked in, film-makers were upping sticks and leaving Los Angeles for more cost-effective locations to shoot their movies.

Canada was one of the first countries to benefit from Hollywood's so-called runaway productions, but now the competition is closer to home.

More than 40 US states are offering film-makers tantalising financial incentives, such as rebates and tax-free loans, to make the next blockbuster in their backyard.

Real Estate for the New Mexico Film Industry? Absolutely!

One of the best things about the film industry is the way in which is has a wide-ranging impact on the economy - and that includes the real estate market. There are several ways that realtors and property owners/managers can open up their marketing efforts to the film industry - it just takes understanding your market!

  • Firstly, there's your every-day home sales. The average film worker earns $20,000+ more per year than the average New Mexican. They are a migrant bunch, with a large swath of LA and New York based filmmakers making New Mexico their new home. With real estate prices significantly lower here (at least in the ABQ market), and high wage jobs, film professionals are an excellent home-buying demographic. From grips to studio executives, film professionals are moving to New Mexico. Here's a realtor listing page.
  • Second. List properties as filming locations (earn $500 - several thousand $ per day, depending on the film, the property, the duration, and the size of the production.) Productions carry at least a $1 million bond to take care of any damages that occur during the shoot, but quite frequently your location will look better after the production leaves than before they arrived! That's because they'll sometimes re-paint or re-plaster, fix up the landscaping, (all with your express permission, of course). You'll work with a locations manager who is essentially the liasion between you and the production - and they'll make sure everything goes smoothly. Any any kind of property can make a great location: residential, commerical, ranch, factory, vacant lot - you name it! See our Locations section to see some listings!
  • Consider marketing your home as a furnished rental. Whether its for the Above the Line film crew, or just film professionals coming to town for business or play, furnished rentals are a very common element of production housing, and a great way to generate income for an investment property. Search our furnished rentals database now!
  • Commercial properties - do you have an open commercial/industral space that can be used as a temporary production office? The film industry needs office space for their productions; leases are typically short-term (3-6 months). Helpful things are: plenty of parking, climate control (obviously), and a flexible amount of space. Some productions just need office space, and some need casting facilities, storage/warehousing, catering/dining spaces, production vehicle parking - it runs the spectrum.
  • Do you have a commercial property that you think makes a good fit for a film professional, a film business, or film studio? Realtor De Ann Ottaway just listed the historic Fred Harvey Hotel La Castenada in Las Vegas with crewnewmexico.com. A great fit, as the Hotel has been used as a film location - and perhaps it can stay in the film world under new ownership.
  • Here's some of the folks who have taken advantage of our current 50% off special for realtors:
  • Frank Warmath and his great new lodging listing! Watch for more details.
  • Great new furnished rental offered by Garrett VeneKlasen. Watch for more details.
  • Realtor De Ann Ottaway (we wrote about this last week but we're so excited we have to say it again) who's listing the historic Fred Harvey Hotel in Las Vegas, NM!
  • Santa Fe Realtor Nancy Chiriboga, who's listing the amazing property Inn of the Turquoise Bear in Santa Fe.
Whether you're a home owner, or a listing agent, you ought to consider the opportunities available to you now that the film industry has become a sizeable and increasingly established part of the New Mexico economy. In 2007 alone, the film industry itself pumped $250,000,000 into the state - and that doesn't include the expenditures made by film professionals in their personal lives. We're proud to be part of such an exciting industry, and always welcome your inquiries and are happy to do what we can to help get you involved!

Special Welcome to the Sheraton Uptown ABQ

We'd like to give a warm welcome to one of our newest members - the Sheraton Uptown Albuquerque. They've just completed a $20 million remodel and have upped the bar considerably on style and comfort for accommodations in Albuquerque - and they're inviting the film industry to come in for a look. Impeccable rooms, conference space, dining, hip place to hang out and have drinks, great location.

About their rooms, perhaps they can say it best:
"The Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown unveiled a 20 million dollar transformation in 2008. Now, each of our 295 guest rooms has been completely reimagined, with everything necessary for a great night’s sleep and a productive workday, including our famous Sheraton Sweet Sleeper(SM) Bed, a state of the art 37" LCD flat screen television, oversized bathroom and amenities, and in-room safe. Our contemporary designed guest rooms also feature wired or wireless High Speed Internet Access, ample workspace, in-room movies, and of course, fresh Starbucks coffee and Tazo teas for the day ahead"

The Uptown would also make an excellent filming location, with its hip new design, clean lines, and welcome attitude to the film industry. We're glad to have them onboard!
